eBook ‘how to’

What is an ebook and why should I read one?

Ebooks are electronic books designed to be read on ereaders, tablets, computer screens, mobile phones or other electronic devices. There are lots of reasons why you might prefer to read ebooks:

  • Ebooks can be downloaded in moments, so you don’t have to wait for delivery before diving into the story.
  • Even on small devices you can store lots of ebooks – no more lugging around lots of heavy books in your handbag or suitcase!
  • Many devices allow you to change the fonts and font sizes, search the text and make notes in your ebooks.
  • Many Entice titles are only available in ebook, so in some cases it’s the only way to get your hands on the stories!

What is an ereader?

This name is usually giving to an electronic device dedicated to ereading. Some of the most popular ereading devices include the Amazon Kindle, Sony PRS and Kobo ranges. Many of these devices use a technology called E Ink which uses very little battery power and does not have a reflective screen – meaning you can even read them in bright sunlight! Ereaders which use E Ink better replicate the reading experience you’d get with a book, but they aren’t usually capable of displaying video or colour.

What is a tablet?

A tablet is a personal computing device usually made up of a flat touch screen and with mobile capabilities. Popular tablet devices include the Apple iPad, Blackberry Playbook and the Kindle Fire.

How can I buy Entice ebooks?

Entice ebooks are available from a number of ebooks vendors. For a full list please click below.

I can see a title on this website but I can’t buy it from any of the retailers you list, why is that?

It may be that we don’t hold the rights to sell this title to your country – but rights vary for each title so it’s always worth having a go at another one!

What is DRM?

DRM is an acronym for Digital Rights Management, and is applied to all of our titles as standard. Depending on where you choose to buy Entice ebooks, the DRM may vary: Amazon Kindle and the Apple iBookstore have their own proprietary DRM, while most other vendors use Adobe DRM. Using DRM helps make sure our ebooks are sold legally and safely, and that authors get the royalties they deserve from each sale!

Are ebooks safe to download?

Ebooks are perfectly safe when downloaded from any of our retail partners, listed in the vendor list above.

How much space will ebooks take up on my computer/tablet/eReader?

Ebook files are generally very small in size, particularly when compared with audio or video files, so most devices will be able to store very large numbers of ebooks.

Can ebooks be ordered by email/phone or letter?

No, ebooks can only be ordered online.

Do we have to pay VAT on ebooks?

Yes, but VAT is included in the price given by most ebook retailers.

Can ebooks be given as gifts?

Sorry, but at the moment it is not possible to give ebooks as gifts from our retail partners.

Do I have to be online to read an ebook?

No, once you have downloaded an ebook you can read it even if you’re not connected to the internet. However, you do have to be online to make your purchase. Most downloads only take a few minutes to complete, and can take as little as a few seconds! This will depend on the file size of the ebook you’re downloading and the speed of your internet connection.

Can I read Entice ebooks on a Kindle or using a Kindle app?

Absolutely! All Entice ebooks are available for Kindle through Amazon, or through the retailers listed above for other devices.

Can I read Entice ebooks on my iPad/iPod/Smart phone?

Yes! All Entice ebooks are available through <these retailers>, or through <Amazon> for Kindle devices or Kindle apps.

Are Entice titles available in other formats?

Many Entice titles are ebook only, which means we do not publish them in printed or other formats. Some Entice titles are published in ebook format first, with the printed book being published a few months later. These are marked on the titles webpages.

Will I have to pay delivery charges for my ebooks?

No, the price you see should be the price you pay and there should be no charge for delivery. However, your service provider may charge you for the data used in downloading ebooks over the internet, including wifi and 3G. Check with your service provider for details.

Refunds or Returns

To find out if you can get a refund or return on an ebook please check with the retailer from whom you bought it.

I’ve found errors in my ebook, what do I do?

Ooops, sorry! We do take every care to make sure our ebooks are ship-shape when we make them available. However, some errors do slip through. If this has happened with one of your ebooks from us, drop us a line at piatkus.entice@littlebrown.co.uk telling us which title it is and giving details of the errors. We will then fix them as quickly as possible and you will be able to download a corrected version at no extra cost.

We’ve also found that some ‘system’ errors – such as the ebook not opening – can be fixed simply by re-downloading to your device or computer. Check with your retailer for details on how to do this.

I’m having problems with my Entice ebook and none of the answers above help. Who can I contact?

If you’re having a problem that isn’t addressed in the answers above, do feel free to drop us a line at piatkus.entice@littlebrown.co.uk. To help us help you, please give as much information about your problem as possible, including:

  • Title
  • Where you bought it from and when
  • What device you use
  • The exact error message (if applicable)

We’ll then look into your problem and get back to you as quickly as possible.
